At first my art arose from places I lived in and knew well—housing projects, poor neighborhoods in the South, and a Mexican immigrant community in Chicago. I admired how my neighbors used visual means to seize control of economic, cultural, and political power. In essence, how they maintain their humanity against great odds. Now I examine the complex symbol system that undergirds power and sustains it broad influence. I traveled to Haiti, Mexico, and New Orleans to understand how global politics, emigrations, and economic decisions effect farmers and market women, in seemingly remote villages or across town. I try to make beautiful images about these complex ideas, because I want you to think more, know more, and feel more when you look at my work.
